Smith’s Terrestrial Globe on Mahogany Stand circa 1830

About the Item

A fine example of a 12 inch diameter terrestrial table or library globe on mahogany stand with cartouche that reads “Smith’s Terrestrial Globe, containing the whole of The Latest Discoveries and Geographical Improvements, also the tracks of the most celebrated circumnavigators, London, C. Smith & Son, 172 Strand”. The globe has a stamped brass meridian circle, a horizon ring graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, with compass directions, days of the month and days of the houses of the Zodiac. The wooden turned pedestal base has scroll-topped inswept tripod legs, terminating with casters. The globe dates to circa 1830 and is in very good condition, with some horizon ring repairs and losses, minor surface imperfections, and light wear commensurate with age and use.
