"Bathers, " Brilliant Late Art Deco Folding Screen in Pointillist Manner, 1958

About the Item

A vivid example of late Art Deco painting, executed in a pointillist manner, this four-panel screen was created by John Sennhauser, a Swiss-born artist who was active in New York from the 1930s to the 1960s. The screen was retailed by the renowned Charles R. Gracie and Sons, founded in 1898, which has provided fine wallpapers, murals, lamps and other decorative items to New York’s elite. Although best known for a series of abstract paintings influenced by Miro and Kandinsky, Sennhauser also did several sensuous, richly-colored paintings in the 1950s and 1960s, although this is the only screen of its kind known to exist. The artist worked closely with Hilla Rebay, the founding director of the Guggenheim Museum, for two years, and his works were exhibited there as well as the Chicago Institute of Arts, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Corcoran and the Whitney.
