About the Item

Sculptural mid-20th century umbrella and walking cane stand. This rare and highly decorative umbrella stand is one of the cleanest that we ever had the pleasure of offering. It was handcrafted in the mid twentieth century, but this rare brass stand is a copy of a mid nineteenth century original which was made of cast iron. The hunting heron is posed in the way a real one would when trying to catch a fish in the little pond in front of him. If there is, that little fish could be swallowed in hole soon. The winged heron sculpture is ofcourse what makes this vintage piece extra attractive. By taking on his still pose, the heron will lure the fish into believing that they are safely swimming in the shadow of a tree. The heron probably is only seconds away from a good lunch, because he has got his eyes fixated on the water below him. Maybe the artist is telling us about the crewelty of nature or maybe he is telling us that any given situation may not always be what we think it is. Either way, in all our years we have only seen two antique ones, but a brass one from circa 1950 we never saw before. The heron's wings obviously are there to place your umbrellas or sticks against.
