Pair Rare John Campbell Terracotta Chinoiserie Planters or Umbrella Stands
Located in Melbourne, AU
An exceptionally rare pair of John Campbell planter pots. The design is attributed to John Cambell's son, Rupert John Campbell.
John Campbell produced decorative pots at his brick works and pottery in Launceston, Tasmania from 1880 until 1975. Rupert John inherited his father's works and was a skilled artisan and potter. He developed presses for decorative pottery.
This beautiful pair of jardinières likely date to the early 1900s. They were passed down through three generations. The original owner gave them to her son. In the 1980s the (then elderly) son gifted them to a friend (the last owner before this sale). At the time they received them they were made aware of their age and rarity. Now, another forty years later, they are potentially the only pair in existence.
Only one similar John Campbell un-glazed terracotta 'umbrella stand' can be found on record. It was sold in 2008 in Tasmania, at a 'Fine Colonial Decorative Arts' auction run by Mossgreen Auctions, a reputable auction house, though since closed. I can find no other reference to this model, except an acknowledgement of the existence of an un-glazed terracotta umbrella stand, in the definitive record of Campbell's work by Kevin Power, 'John Campbell Pottery: Recollections and Collections' published 2014.
These are of the same design and size but were manufactured with drainage holes in the base. They were clearly decorated using a press but the clay slabs were pushed into the press by hand. The interior of each pot shows the marks of hammers used to force the clay into the face of the press pattern. They have a hand-crafted appearance, with hand finished mould lines to each side and there are pressing faults apparent in various areas of the pattern.
Tasmania was notably independent in production of most household goods, due to the isolation of the colony right up until the turn of the 19th century. Being at the farthest reaches of the British Empire, settled as a penal colony, with a relatively low consumer population, it was not a market for the high-volume import of domestic goods.
As a consequence, household wares and decorative pieces produced in Tasmania through the 19th century represent a wholly independent category of Australian colonial design, production and craft. These pots are highly collectable and scarce artifacts of one of Tasmania’s earliest industries.
In aesthetic terms, many Tasmanian artifacts are notable for following British, Georgian and Victorian fashions but with a colonial character of their own devising. Local characteristics became a stronger feature of Tasmanian decoration over time. Note the classical Georgian/Victorian chinoiserie motif of a bird foraging among rushes. In this case, the local interpretation depicts a Brolga (the largest Australian wetland bird) foraging amongst native Australian reeds and water lilies.
Another of the things that sets early Tasmanian artifacts apart is the way in which necessity forced artistic production in pottery to be less refined than that of their British counterparts. A broad range of products had to be produced to meet local requirements, often by a single producer.
John Campbell’s pottery is a great example of this practical necessity. It produced everything from industrial drainage pipes and bricks to household pottery and decorative items, all from a relatively small family run factory. Their domestic wares were so well trusted and appreciated that they by the 1940s they made their way all over the mainland of Australia.
Under these circumstances, the refinement of decorative technique was not as great a priority as utility, consistent quality of production and durability. As a consequence, Australian colonial works and their early 20th century descendants such as these pots, are hugely appealing. They have an idiosyncratic and vernacular appearance, with British and European stylistic trends of their day overlaying a base of inventiveness, local interpretation and sturdy functionality.
We hope you can appreciate the rarity and significance of this well-preserved pair of planter...

Original Genuine Featherston contour lounge suite R160 R161
By Grant Featherston
Located in PORT MELBOURNE, AU
Product ID:

Product Description Title:
Original Genuine restored Featherston contour suite pair armchairs R160 matching R161 settee (pair of armchairs + settee)
Full Description:
A highly collectable original authentic Featherston contour suite which includes the pair of armchairs and matching settee in original olive green fabric from the factory most likely from 1950s possibly early 1960s. We were lucky enough to purchase this complete set from a private collector prior from a furniture dealer in Melbourne. The original olive dark green fabric has withstood its test of time in fabulous condition as the mould and legs/timber have been thoroughly inspected and tested. Although Featherston contour chairs are fairly "common" a complete original set with original fabric is very rare indeed, and we have spent no expense on restoring the legs/timber to original glory in its lovely silky oak finish. We chose not to re-upholster the suite in another new fabric as an original suite in excellent condition original fabric is hard to come by. This suite has been hired in several exhibitions (ngv window shop as part of the MCM exhibition as well as Ian Howards...

Aboriginal Painting by Makinti Napananka (1930-2011), Australia
Located in NICE, FR
ABOUT THE WORK
Makinti primarily paints episodes from the Dreamtime, featuring the ancestral women, Kungka Kutjarra, drawing particular inspiration from motifs associated with the site of Lupulnga. Her artworks are characterized by sweeping waves that resemble slightly curved lines (symbolizing ceremonial hair-string skirts used in certain rituals) or ovals that occasionally assemble to form what appears to be a wall of cells. Some of her compositions combine both motifs, always in a cohesive tonal harmony dominated by ochres, oranges, pinks, and, in some pieces, purples. While the men of her generation adhered to a highly detailed style, Makinti's spontaneity and vigor set her apart in contemporary Aboriginal art.
The artwork comes from an art center and possesses a registration number (05MN1626), with details provided on the back of the canvas. It is sold with a certificate of authenticity.
ABOUT MAKINTI NAPANANGKA (1930-2011)
Makinti Napanangka was born in 1930 in the Lake McDonald region. In 1972, she settled in Papunya at the time when the first group of male artists was formed. However, it wasn't until 1994 that women gained access to painting materials. She initiated her artistic career in Haasts Bluff and, in 1996, took advantage of the establishment of the new cooperative, Papunya Tula. Quickly, she gained significant renown. Presently, Makinti's artworks are highly sought after by collectors worldwide and are found in prominent private and public collections. Recognized as a leading artist from the Papunya Tula center, she was listed as one of the "50 Most Collectable Australian Artists" by the Australian Art Collector Magazine in 2003, 2004, and 2005. The director of the Papunya art center described her as "the best painter since Emily (Kngwarreye), with no living match in her painterly freedom, and her fearless blend of naive and sophisticated elements."
She passed away in 2011.

Large Australian Aboriginal Painting by Mabel Juli
Located in Atlanta, GA
A striking large painting by Australian Aboriginal artist Mabel Juli (b. 1931) circa 1990s. This large abstract landscape painting on the dreamscape of the Western Australian Desert was boldly executed with several shades of earth pigments. The contrast of their colors, the granule textures of the surface and the abstract composition made it visually arresting.
Provenance: inscribed verso: "Warmun Art Centre, Mabel Juli 409/08 " Paper label affixed from "Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi Gallery, Melbourn, Australia", where the painting was originally purchased prior to 2004.

Aboriginal Painting of 'Embers of Spinifex Tradition' by Paddy Sims Japaljarri
Located in NICE, FR
ABOUT THE ARTWORK: This Aboriginal painting shows traditional practices associated with the burning of areas of Spinifex country. The fires are lit so that liwirringki (burrowing skinks), lizards and small mammals are driven from their burrows and hiding places. This allows them to hunt them more easily and also promotes the fertility of the land. This ancient practice has been practised for thousands of years by the Aborigines of Australia. In this work, Paddy Sims Japaljarri, who is one of the eminent initiates of his clan, also evokes the male ceremonies of homage to the ancestors performed by these nomads steeped in spirituality in the central Australian desert. The painting comes from Warlukurlangu Art Center.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Paddy Japaljarri Sims was born in 1917. He is married to Bessie Sims Nakamarra, also a well-known artist and important initiate in his community. He was one of the first generations of aboriginal artists at the origin of the pictorial movement in Yuendumu and saw his fame become international during his trip to Paris in 1989 when he was invited to present his works on the occasion of the famous exhibition "The Magicians of the Earth" at the Georges Pompidou center. In 2000, he engraved with Paddy Stewart 30 plates from which we were going to make small-format engravings: it was with this very special work that the two men won the prize in the “best work on paper” category at the prestigious Testra Award. An essential artist and presented today as one of the founding representatives of contemporary Aboriginal painting, his works are present in all the major Australian public collections as well as at the Jacques Chirac Museum in Paris. Awards received by this artist: 2001. Awards, Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, Darwin (Australia) Her works are present in many collections: Araluen Arts Center, Alice Springs (Australia) Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (Australia) Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth (Australia) Australian National Gallery, Canberra (Australia) Australian Museum, Sydney (Australia) Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (Australia) Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth (Australia) Art Gallery and Museums, Glasgow, Scotland (Scotland) Donald Kahn Collection (United States) Flinders University Art Museum, Adelaide (Australia) Gordon Darling Foundation, Canberra (Australia) Queensland University of Technology Art...
