William Plummer 1780s Georgian Sterling Silver Candle Snuffer / Pen Tray
By William Plummer
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An excellent, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver candle snuffer / pen tray; an addition to our 18th century silverware collection.
This exceptional antique Georgian sterling silver candle snuffer tray has a navette shaped form.
The surface of this antique silver snuffer/pen tray is ornamented with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a centaur regardant holding and arrow on a bended bow, above the bright cut engraved initials 'WIL'.
The outer circumference of the surface is encompassed with an undulating wriggle work decorated border.
The raised rounded sides of the tray are embellished with pierced decorated urn designs conjoined by suspended bright cut engraved festoon ornamentation further accented with undulating pin struck decoration.
The tray is further embellished with an applied bead decorated border to the rim.
Either end of the tray incorporates an impressive pierced and applied scrolling leaf decorated handle accented with a pendant drop design to the inner surface.
This exceptional tray was crafted by the London silversmith William Plummer who is known for his work with pierced decoration.
The centaur in this stance is also a depiction of Sagittarius (otherwise known as Arcitenens), one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

George 111 period Chippendale Arm Chair finely carved, Circa 1760
By Thomas Chippendale
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hardwood, Mid Georgian, Thomas Chippendale period Arm Chair of excellent wide proportions and superb colour, which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760.
The Armchair has many fine features:
Excellent wide proportions.
Fine Scroll Arms.
Similar carved Scroll Ears to ends of cresting rails.
Intersecting ribbon pierced splat with carved detail.
Fluted side rails to back.
The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer on both back and front legs.
It has a drop-in seat with a very light green plain fabric. This drop in seat allows for an easy change of fabric covering to one of choice, by reupholstering the seat.
The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the back and rear legs. The hardwood, possibly Walnut, has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years.
Overall a fine quality, English Georgian Arm Chair...

Black basalt figure of Bacchus. Wedgwood C1780.
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Exceptionally rare early figure of Bacchus in black basalt. The mixed-case mark places this figure between 1780 and 1785.
He is portrayed in typical style, his head garlanded with grapes and with a wine cup to his lips.
Bacchus, also known as Dionysus in Greek mythology, is the enigmatic god of wine, fertility, and ritual madness. He symbolizes freedom, ecstasy, and the blurring of societal norms through his rituals and festivities. Bacchus is often depicted in myths as a deity who challenges the status quo, promoting an atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply, and his followers are liberated from their everyday constraints.
Born from Zeus and the mortal Semele, Bacchus is unique among gods, bridging the divide between the divine and the human. His followers included the wild and ecstatic maenads, female devotees who often reached states of divine frenzy, and the satyrs, mischievous half-man, half-goat beings. The worship of Bacchus was marked by theatrical processions, dances, and plays, reflecting his patronage of the theater and the dramatic arts.
Bacchus’s mythology...
