An exceptional, fine and impressive antique English 18 karat gold snuff box; an addition to our 19th century collection. This exceptional antique English 18k yellow gold snuff box has an oblong form with rounded ends. The body of this antique box is embellished with engine turned decoration, accented with tooled borders. This impressive antique 18k gold box is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with further engine turned decoration to the upper plateau; the underside of the box bears the same design as the cover. The anterior rim of the cover incorporates an impressive applied yellow gold thumbpiece, ornamented with cast floral festoon decoration. The interior of the cover is embellished with the contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented to Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Cother C.B. on his retirement from the Service by the Officers of the 83d Regiment, As a token of their respect and esteem, MDCCCXXIX'; these Roman numerals pertain to 1829. Condition This antique 18k gold snuff box is an exceptional gauge of gold, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The cast decoration is very sharp and the engine turned and engraved decoration is very crisp. EVERY LAWYER AND JUDGE MUST HAVE! This extraordinary bronze gavel, dated 1603 and weights 1,3 kg. It is a rare and evocative example of early ceremonial instruments. Cast in the form of a clenched fist- symbolising authority, resolve, and order- it is mounted on a worn, aged wooden handle that enhances its historic character. The craftsmanship and materials suggest it originated in medieval or early Stuart England, a period when guilds, courts, and civic bodies often used symbolic tools to assert power and structure in meetings and proceedings. While the term “gavel” became widely recognised in the 18th and 19th centuries, mallet-like instruments were used much earlier, particularly in English trade guilds and legal contexts, where they served as emblems of control and decision-making. The clenched fist design is highly unusual, possibly denoting a unique ceremonial role or elevated authority within a guild or council. This is a fine Ironstone pottery Desert Plate made by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England and beautifully decorated in the Small Vase, flower & Rock Pattern, fully stamped and dating to the earliest period of Mason's Ironstone production, circa 1815. This design is one of Mason's very decorative chinoiserie patterns called the Small Vase, Flowers and Rock pattern, with a bamboo stem border and rich hand gilding. This Imari inspired pattern is illustrated on Page 110 of a Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, produced by The Mason's Collectors Club. The fundamental pieces of the basic service were crafted by the Sheffield silversmith Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd between 1934-1939; these pieces will have been crafted in fewer years but due to the hallmarking system the components bear the date letters 'r', 's', 't', 'u', 'v' and 'w'. This service will have been retailed as a complete set and between the dates stated. The stainless steel blades of the original composite handled table and dessert knives bear the mark 'By Appointment to the Late King George V, Viners Ltd, Sheffield' accented with 'Stainless Deluxe'. This impressive canteen of cutlery is fitted to the original, fine and impressive oak three draw canteen table; this is an impressive piece of furniture in its own right. The table is fitted with a pair of Art Deco style gilt metal handles to each drawer, in addition to plain escutcheons. This exceptional cutlery table is supported by four plain legs with tapering knopped feet. The velvet interior of each draw has some wear in keeping with age, but can be considered to be in presentation condition.
