About the Item

In the Karabagh region (literally "black garden") located in the south-east of Kazak, in Armenia, for centuries the homonymous carpets are very varied in the types because they are strongly influenced by the manufacturing of neighboring populations. The weaving of carpets in Karabakh has developed thanks to the rich resources of raw materials (local wool and natural vegetable dyes) and to the ancient tradition of craftsmanship. Very often they are found in elongated measures such as our specimen which has a particular decoration with thick and repeated rosettes, certainly of Persian origin. The predominant color is the "cochineal red", which is a natural, very expensive dye, obtained from the homonymous insect, which secretes a very dense and intensely colored liquid, which uses as a shell to protect itself from predators.

The Ersari are a tribe of the Turkmen people of Central Asia and one of the five main tribes of Turkmenistan. The Eersani tribe, the most numerous among the Turkmen tribe, takes its name from the legendary Turkmen hero Ersari Khan. The group's carpets generally attributed to the Ersari include specimens characterized by a vast repertoire of compositional schemes, drawings, and techniques; this is because, under the generic name of Ersari, carpets knotted by various sub-tribes are included. Of great interest is the archaic polygonal motif decorated with thin pendants (probably its derivation from ancient fabrics...
