Antique Caucasian Karabagh Runner, circa 1920

About the Item

An outstanding example of Caucasian carpets woven in the European style created by Caucasian artisans, this corridor size runner features a floral composition on a black field surrounded by red/maroon borders. The Karabaghs in this style are remarkable for their completely new use of graduated color-shading and for the abundant covering of the field. The irregular outline and the hesitancy which appears in the pattern, which is however of great richness, reminds us of simplicity of the methods used and the lack of familiarity of the mountain weavers with aesthetic ideal, so different from their own. The rug is in remarkable condition and in full pile, all sides and ends are original and no restorations were found on this rug and dyes used to make it are organic.
