Antique Persian Ziegler Mahal, circa 1920
About the Item
This carpet known as Mahal, is made by the well known European design company Ziegler. In the second half of 19th century, the demand for soft colors and room size carpets increased significantly in Europe and North America. In 1870 Messrs. Ziegler & Co established workshops throughout rug weaving areas in Persia and produced some of most beautiful masterpieces. This rug is made in one of those weaving centers Mahallat, a village located in the south of Arak region.
Connoisseurs may note hints to the Sultanabad rug family also woven by Ziegler Co in the same area by master weavers. This rug with an open field of rust/orange background, hosts a not too dominant center medallion which simplifies an otherwise complicated design project. Few unnoticeable restorations were performed on this carpet and is in excellent condition.
