Shepherd's Tulu Hand Knotted Wool Rug Coat

About the Item

An original Anatolian Tulu pile rug hand knotted with natural, undyed wool and tailored into a coat. This was used by the shepherds inhabiting the area of Karapinar, in central Anatolia, at the center of the homeland of one of the greatest nomadic weaving tradition. This type is among the earliest manifestations of pile weaving known to mankind, as it is documented that central Anatolian nomads wove the first pile carpets in an attempt to mimic the effect of animal fur.
