Alessandro Mendini Postmodern Zabro Armchair / Table for Zanotta, 1984

About the Item

The Zabro table/chair was designed by Alessandro Mendini and produced by the Italian manufacturer Zanotta in 1984. The top and seat are made of lacquered wood with hand-decorated polychrome decoration. Armrests upholstered in leather. The chair turns into a table by overturning the top. Excellent vintage condition. Alessandro Mendini (16 August 1931 – 18 February 2019) was an Italian designer and architect. He played an essential part in the development of Italian, Postmodern, and Radical design. Aside from his artistic career, he also worked for Casabella, Modo, and Domus magazines. His design's character is marked by his strong interest in mixing different cultures and forms of expression; he created graphics, furniture, interiors, paintings, and architecture and wrote several articles and books. He was renowned as an enthusiastic jury member in architectural competitions for young designers. He taught at the University of Milan. Mendini was born in Milan. He graduated from Politecnico di Milano in 1959 with a degree in architecture and worked as a designer with Marcello Nizzoli. He was the editor-in-chief of Domus magazine from 1979 to 1985 and changed the landscape of modern design through his outstanding works of postmodernism, such as the Proust Armchair and the Groninger Museum. Just as works of the Renaissance period expressed human values and sensibilities, Mendini contributed to bringing into the heart of design those "values" and "sensibilities" that have been eclipsed by commercialism and functionalism. He collaborated with Cartier, Gufram, Hermès, Vacheron Constantin, Swarovski, Venini, and Supreme. From 1989 up until he died in Milan in 2019, he ran his practice in Milan, the Atelier Mendini, together with his younger brother Francesco Mendini.

  • Alessandro Becchi Grey Leather “Anfibio” Three Seater Sofa for Giovannetti, 1972
    By Giovannetti, Alessandro Becchi
    Located in Vicenza, IT
Anfibio sofa-bed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti, 1972. Fully restored and upholstered with high-quality grey Italian natural leather. Mattress upholstered with soft sheepskin wool. The Anfibio sofa ranks among the most outstanding cult products of Italian design. It is innovative, original, and highly functional; it is a revolutionary sofa-bed, a symbol of high quality and sapient artisanry. It is possible to find it in the permanent collection of 13 museums worldwide, among which the MoMa in New York, since 1972. Alessandro Becchi designed the “Anfibio” sofa for the Italian manufacturer Giovannetti in 1970. It is characterized by generous dimensions and soft, embracing shapes that invite relaxation and comfort. It reminds a floating dinghy thanks to its lack of rigid mechanism. This feature inspired its name, which means amphibious. Furthermore, the sofa presents a rectangular steel structure and padding in non-deformable high-density polyurethane, covered with acrylic thermo-welded fibers and protective fabric. The Anfibio sofa by Giovannetti is available covered in leather or fabric and several colors. This artwork is the ideal convertible solution, the perfect combination of aesthetic research and innovative household living. Alessandro Becchi was born in Florence in 1946. He studied at ISIA in his hometown, and in the late 60s, he began his career as a designer. In 1970 he designed the revolutionary Anfibio sofa for Giovannetti. In 1972, thanks to the success of Anfibio, he was invited to the exhibition “Italy: the New Domestic Landscape” at the Museum of Modern Arts in New York. This date opens in close collaboration with Giovannetti. He designed a series of sofa-beds, such as Only You, Brando, Diletto, and the famous armchairs Le Bugie...
