About the Item

Pair of rare and elegant “Hängsits” armchairs in solid pine and blue fabric, designed by Carl Malmsten in Sweden, 1947. Belonging among the rarer models of Carl Malmsten, these armchairs from the late 1940s feature unique block-shaped solid pine frames, which beautifully indicate Malmsten’s great educational background in architecture. Moreover, the pine frames exhibit subtle design elements, such as the curved armrests and backrest ends, as well as slightly tilted backrests. This unique form makes the armchairs appear simultaneously massive yet very light and airy. Together with the distinctive details, the overall appearance renders this pair a remarkable representation of Swedish craftsmanship in the 20th century. The name of this model, “Hängsits”, is mainly inspired by the seemingly unsupported seat and backrest that “hang” between the sculptural pine frames. The armchairs are after a complete restoration, the seats and backrests are newly reupholstered in premium blue fabric. Additionally, underneath the seats, the armchairs feature the original hot stamp “CM”. Date of manufacture: 1947 Origin: Sweden Material: Solid pine, Fabric Dimensions: Height 78 cm x Width 58 cm x Depth 70 cm Condition: The armchairs are after a complete restoration, the seats and backrests are newly reupholstered in premium blue fabric.
