Dutch Zig Zag side chair with holes and short armrests, 1970s
About the Item
A small and elegant vintage (1970s) Zig Zag side chair after Gerrit Rietvelds' 1938 rare design with holes and short armrests. This chair dates from between the 1970s and 1980s and was crafted by a local Amsterdam furniture maker. It is in good condition with small signs of wear. The (pine) wood is laquered in light/cream paint. Nice addition are the wooden slats on the armrest, in a different type of darker wood.
This chair is clearly an ode to a very similar variant of the Zig Zag chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the course of the 1930s. According to the documentation, 'models were created with armrests, with holes in the back, with a lower seat or combinations thereof, and made in more luxurious types of wood'. The architect often tried out his designs and gave first try outs to family members. Rietveld gave one of his first chairs with this design to his daughter Bep Eskes and in 2015, granddaughter Martine Eskes decided to donate it to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it is now on display.
