About the Item

The tone of the stain and the manner in which it complements the mahogany, causes this pair of George III Chippendale armchairs to stand out. The chairs are circa 1920, and two later than the first quarter of the 20th century. The hand carving just stops the eye. The intricate work at the knees, the back splat and the organic quality of the ball and claw foot are evocative. The quality is in the details: each chair with shaped acanthus-carved crest over a pierced strapwork back with acanthus carving. There are serpentine arms with carved ends. A bonus: the trapezoidal slip-seat has been reupholstered and re-imagined in charcoal leather, with a gadrooned carved front rail, all raised on front cabriole legs that end in the ball and claw feet and straight rear legs. The chair is 39 inches high overall; seat width is 29 inches, seat depth is 17 inches. This pair of armchairs are understated but exude elegance, and there is a no-nonsense utility here. They are uber comfortable. The chairs are steady and solid, and ready to be installed and pressed into service for the next 100 years. A design asset that works well with modern or more traditional themes, including in a home or workplace office.
