Pair of "Oscar" Armchairs by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazilian Midcentury Design 1956

About the Item

The Oscar armchair, designed by Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014) in 1956, serves as a tribute to Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012), a highly influential figure in the realm of modern Brazilian architecture. This armchair, which follows the design principles of Rodrigues' initial furniture venture, the Hauner Sofa (1954), features a seating design characterized by distinct volumes. It consists of cane backrests and seats that are supported by a wooden frame accentuated with elements like slender legs and intricately designed seat support cutouts. The armrests are crafted to conform ergonomically to the body. Commissioned originally by the Brazilian Jockey Club in Rio de Janeiro, the chair was ultimately rejected for being excessively modern, a testament to the avant-garde nature of Rodrigues' designs that were ahead of mainstream preferences. Restoration of wood and cane are part of the offering.

The 1960s Space Age design, influenced by space exploration and atomic era tensions, brought a futuristic twist to art, cinema, and interior design. Originating amid Cold War anxieties on the American West Coast, it combined humor and avant-garde creativity, often using 'vital forms' inspired by nuclear imagery. This style features modern, cosmic-inspired furniture with vibrant plastics, reflective metals, and curved lines, creating a futuristic ambiance reminiscent of a Stanley Kubrick film. Dominated by spherical and angular shapes, it mirrors the era's fascination with space and atomic science. Enhancing brightness and contrasting with the colorful, reflective furniture. Warm colors and silver accents add to the optimistic, futuristic vibe of this 1960s-inspired design. The idea was to expand distribution and reduce production costs. The industrial thought is visible on the structural solution, applying juxtaposed wooden pieces of a square or rectangular section and straight corners. Other pieces like the “Franco” sofa, the “Tonico” armchair...
