Set of 2 Danish Model 113 Oak Armchairs by Nanna Ditzel, Denmark, c. 1950's

About the Item

These “Model 113” chairs, with their elegant and ergonomic shape, are instantly recognizable as being Danish Mid-Century Modern. As with most of Ditzel’s designs, like her iconic “Egg Chair” (1959), the ”Model 113” chair is based on a circlular shape, as shown with the deep curvature of the backrest. This graceful curve is contrasted with the square, tapered shape of the legs and the natural oak softens this juxtaposition; resulting in a balanced and clean-lined frame. The delicately hand-woven, multi-colored cane seats perfectly offset the deep richness of the solid oak frame. The slight bow of the seat flows with the curves of the frame, making the piece both cohesive and comfortable. These chairs, with their use of premium materials and subtle elegance, showcases the very best qualities of Danish Mid-Century Modern design. Nanna Ditzel (1923 - 2005) was an icon of post-war Danish design, famous for her forward-thinking approach to shape and innovative use of new materials, colors and techniques. She studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where she studied under Painter Victor Isbrand, as well as fellow icons of Danish Modern Design such as Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, Peter Hvidt and Kaare Klint. Largely forgotten by history during her own lifetime as woman operating in a man's world, Nanna Ditzel's life and prolific body of work has recently undergone a Renaissance of acclaim, admiration and reproduction. Now considered by many to be one of the top 5 Danish Modern designers and this reevaluation of Ditzel's impact on Danish design history is part of a wider reassessment of design and architecture history in recent years, acknowledging the impact of women whose work has historically been overlooked in favor of their male peers. Though she began furniture design at the zenith of the Danish Modern movement it's been argued that Ditzel's work served as a link between the canon of Mid-Century Danish Design and a more contemporary generation of designers in Denmark, including Cecilie Manz and Maria Bruun. In ultra-rare 100% original, vintage condition this set is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for a set of authentic, Danish-made Nanna Ditzel chairs. Perfect in both home and office spaces this set of Model 113 chairs can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Boho Chic and everything in between. With their intricately sculpted backs, hand-woven cane seats and feminine features this extraordinary set of chairs is as rare as it is aesthetically breathtaking. Make them yours today before they're truly gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 23 in / 58.42 cm Depth: 21 in / 53.34 cm Height: 26.5 in / 67.31 cm Seat Height: 16.5 in / 41.91 cm This set of iconic Model 113 chairs, designed by the revered Nanna Ditzel and produced in Denmark in the mid-1950's, is in 100% original, vintage condition and are as at home in an art museum as they are in a household. The solid oak frames are in excellent shape showing only minor nicks and light scratches (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no gouges, stains or other signs of wear whatsoever and the woodgrains are truly stunning in natural light.
