About the Item

Introducing an ultra-rare set of cane-back dining chairs designed by the influential Milo Baughman for Directional made in the early 1960's. Constructed from a frame of solid American black walnut with stunning variegated woodgrains this set of dining chairs feature architecturally and visually fascinating oval-shaped, caned backrests. The caning, in superb original condition, as well as the intricate brass fasteners add a sense of airiness for an otherwise grandiose chair. With new upholstery, redone in a black vinyl that mirrors the original, this set is ready for a lifetime more of use. A Rich History Milo Baughman, a luminary in the world of mid-century design, was renowned for his innovative take on furniture aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from fellow Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s designs exuded a relaxed and breezy air, steering clear from ostentatious designs. His aesthetic simplicity was exceptionally profound, relying heavily on sturdy flat-bar chromed metal for seating and table frames, beautifully figured wood veneers and balanced geometric proportions. With a career spanning over five decades, Baughman left an indelible mark on the design world. These cane-backed dining chairs are no exception and are a true representation of his ingenuity. Their clean lines, impeccable proportions, and masterful craftsmanship make them a cherished collection among collectors and connoisseurs alike. Founded in 1898 in North Carolina the company that would one day become Directional Furniture Co. began its story producing rocking chairs. By the 1950's the company, under the revolutionary leadership of Katharine Covington Lambeth, began producing audacious and ambitious Modern pieces. Running the company from a woman’s point of view, Lambeth knew what was missing in a furniture industry dominated by men. She wanted two things that were not available to her as a designer -“Choices” and “Quality”. Thus her bold business plan was based on two concepts: “Build to a standard, not a price," and “Focus on what we can do for our customers rather than what we can sell them”. Directional eventually attracted the likes of some of the leading American Mid-Century Modern designers such as but not limited to Vladimir Kagan, Kipp Stewart, Paul McCobb and Milo Baughman all creating their own lines of collections for the company which is still in operation today under the name of Tomlinson Directional. With their extraordinary hoop-shaped backs covered in their original caning, exceptional solid walnut frames and new upholstery this set of elegant dining chairs is ideal for collectors searching for an authentic set of vintage Baughman "Hoop" Chairs. With so few of these chairs ever made, and fewer still in such excellent, vintage condition this set is truly as rare as it is aesthetically captivating. Make them yours today before they're gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 23 in / 58.42 cm Depth: 23 in / 58.42 cm Height: 40 in / 101.6 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm Arm Height: 24 in / 60.96 cm This gorgeous set of Cane-back dining chairs has recently undergone a partial restoration process featuring new upholstery. Save for a few minor repairs (which can be seen in the detail photos provided) the solid black walnut frames are in original condition and show only minor nicks and light scratches but showing no stains, gouges or other wear whatsoever and the variegated woodgrains are absolutely stunning in natural light. The seats, recovered in a kind-to-the-touch black vinyl, feature new medium density foam for maximum comfort and support. The solid brass fasteners show only minor tarnishing. The caning is in remarkably excellent shape showing no breaks, fraying or stains whatsoever and are weight-bearing. This extraordinary set of artfully crafted dining chairs are incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a literal lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and video for details on this set's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
