Six lacquered armchairs. Venice, last quarter of the 18th cent
About the Item
Group of six ivory lacquered, painted and gilded walnut armchairs. Shaped back; the wavy armrests are carved with an acanthus leaf, both on the socket and in the underarm, the latter is developed in a twisting motion and, laterally, the leaf ends in a curl.
The legs are truncated-conical, fluted with jar feet, embellished with beaded frieze and connected to the band by drip elements. The backrests are decorated with a weave of painted ribbons, which ideally hold the carved leafy frieze parallel to them that borders the upholstery; the ribbon motif becomes a pattern of blue festoons hanging from red galls and with gold tassels, both on the armrests and on the uprights and bands. The carved parts are gilded with gouache.
This group of lacquered wooden armchairs is part of the Venetian production of the last quarter of the 18th century. Despite a structure and decorative apparatus composed of purely neoclassical elements, including truncated-conical legs, ribbons, festoons, galls, and drips, they present at the structural level the persistence of some attributes traceable to the mid-century, such as the everted armrests, characteristic of the Baroque taste. Indeed, even when he tried to approach the models of neoclassicism, the Venetian furniture maker would not easily abandon, as in our case, the use of sinuous curves.
The fluted truncated legs, on the other hand, are a clear nod to the classical, architectural world. Similar production can be seen in two salon harnesses dated to the same period and preserved in Venice at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia.
The former shows similarities with ours both structurally and in decoration, for example, the armrests are very similar in shape but also in finish, e.g. look at the acanthus leaf carved into the underarm. The second finial features a painted decoration of leaves and berries joined together as a long unbroken ribbon that speaks the same taste as the painting of the seats described here.
