Vico Magistretti Maralunga Armchair For Cassina

About the Item

Vico Magistretti Maralunga Armchair For Cassina The encapsulation of design brilliance, business insight and made-in-Italy artisan craftsmanship, the Maralunga armchair is an international bestseller steeped in timeless beauty and functionality. Its enveloping contours accentuate the comfort of this design armchair, ensured by the chain mechanism (incorporated into the foam cushion) that controls adjustment of the backrest position. The unpretentious innovation of the adjustable headrest and the reassuring appearance and simplicity of the soft padding sum up the singularity of this design by Vico Magistretti. REMOVABLE UPHOLSTERY Maralunga 40-S upholstery is completely removable in the fabric version. STITCHING Regular stitching (Maralunga) or piping (Maralunga 40/ 40-S). INCLINATION The mechanism was reinforced to offer an additional 7 degrees of inclination to the backrest. An international bestseller with warm, reassuring contours, in which the adjustable backrest, visible softness and generous padding highlight its incredible comfort, making way for myriad interpretations. Often imitated, Maralunga allows headrest height adjustment thanks to a simple bicycle chain inserted into the structure. The mechanism’s cutting-edge construction, patented by Cassina, allows for instantaneous conversion of the backrest from the lower, more formal position for conversation, to the higher position for total relaxation. In 2014, in conjunction with Maralunga’s 40th anniversary, Cassina introduced an updated version with upholstery in fabric or leather and the characteristic piping, lending it an even more modern and contemporary look (Maralunga 40), and the launch of a version with removable fabric upholstery (Maralunga 40-S). The revolutionary sofa evolves again in 2024 to deliver even greater comfort. Thanks to in-depth research carried out in collaboration with the Fondazione Magistretti, the internal mechanism was reinforced to offer an additional 7 degrees of inclination to the backrest, making it more comfortable than ever. The family includes an armchair, ottoman, and two- and three-seat sofas in various dimensions. A warm, relaxing, cozy place, where you feel at ease and rediscover the satisfying, protective embrace of old-fashioned reading chairs placed near a fireplace or a window.” About The Manufacturer: Established in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy, Cassina launched industrial design in Italy in the 1950s, based on a totally innovative approach that marked the transition from artisan production to mass production. With a mindset focused on research and innovation, Cassina combines technology and long-standing artisan craftsmanship. Vico Magistretti 905 Armchair by Cassina
By Cassina, Vico Magistretti
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Armchair model 905 designed by Vico Magistretti in 1964. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. A modern chair with a cultural heritage, expression of the creative genius of Vico Magistretti who designed it in 1964. 905 is an elegant chair made of solid wood and cowhide, where design translates to practical simplicity. Produced by Cassina until 2000, this chair has now been relaunched, the finishes and details having been updated from the original archive model. The sophisticated elegance of the frame, which features cylindrical legs and curved arm-rests, has been rejuvenated thanks to Cassina’s extensive experience in handling leather, not to mention the company’s high quality carpentry skills. The complex nature of this piece is expressed in a design that looks simple but fully reflects the genius quality of the original concept, a veritable masterpiece of the crafts tradition proper to Meda, in the Brianza area north of Milan, the trademark registered by Cassina and a guarantee of utmost quality. The frame, in finest quality wood, bespeaks the perfect combination of the artisanal tradition and premier CNC technology, while the overall design stands out for the self-supporting seat crafted from one single piece of saddle leather, curved and slotted into the frame. The decorative stitching has been discontinued, while the rear of the chair still features the leather belt that lends support to the back and enhances its comfort quotient. The 905 chair features a solid wood structure with cylindrical legs and curved armrests, joined to a self-supporting cowhide seat, the quintessential expression of the time-tested experience of the Cassina joinery and saddlery. A masterpiece of complexity, this cowhide chair symbolizes the company’s talent at perfectly blending traditional artisan craftsmanship and the cutting-edge technology of latest-generation 5-axis CNC machines. The first recognition of his work came in 1948, when he won the Gran Premio at the 8th Triennale. After that came almost forty years of activity with other prizes and awards in recognition of Magistretti’s work in various sectors in different countries. Giving lessons and lectures in various faculties of architecture and schools of design in Italy and abroad, from Milan to New York, from Paris to London, a city to which he is particularly devoted, he has been an “Honorary Fellow” of the Royal College of Art since 1983. Furniture, lamps and other objects that he designed may be found all over the world and the most important design museums have given exhibitions in his honour and kept examples of his work in their permanent collections. Magistretti’s research has been continuous - into design, the culture of the project and innovative experimentation with materials and space solutions, not to mention shapes and functions far from the rigours of fashion that they have passed through during the years. He started designing for Cassina in 1960, and from that date on his signature is to be found on very many products. We recall in particular the Maralunga sofa of 1973 and the Nuvola Rossa...

3-Seater Maralunga Sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina
By Vico Magistretti, Cassina
Located in Grand Cayman, KY
Iconic Mid-Century Modern "Maralunga" 3-seater sofas / armchairs by Vico Magistretti for Cassina. This example features green-grey velvet with colored pattern. While the fabric holds strong, re-covering in new fabric is recommended. Head / backrests are adjustable for a cheeky look that never fails to turn heads in the living room. They are also extremely comfortable. The height of the sofa with fully extended headrest is 40 in (100 cm) and 30 in (71 cm) when fully compressed. It has been professionally laundered and is clean, however, the fabric remains discolored. Structurally sound in every respect and an excellent candidates for re-covering according to decorator's desire. While origin stories behind the world’s timeless designs vary widely, the story of the Maralunga sofa is one of the best in design lore: As legend has it, when Cassina founder Cesare Cassina first saw the prototype for the piece in the mid-1970s by Italian furniture designer Vico Magistretti (1920–2006), he was so disgusted by it that he punched it, breaking the back of the sofa, which crumbled over itself . . . into the shape the piece would eventually take. (“Right, great, it looks perfect to me like that,” Magistretti allegedly responded.) Whether it was his accidental adjustment or further consideration of the design, Cassina clearly came around: His company debuted Magistretti’s design in 1973. The Maralunga is characterized by what looks like a slumped backrest but is really an adjustable-height headrest, moved by way of a bicycle chain...
