Vilhelm Lauritzen Bench in Teak and Metal, 1960s

About the Item

Rare and important bench in steel and teak made on commission for Mørkhøj Skole by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in the 1960s. The bench has a base made of steel tubes with teak shoes and a top of two pieces of solid teak. Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen (9 September 1894 in Slagelse – 22 December 1984) was a Danish architect. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1922 he founded an architectural firm in his own name, the current Vilhelm Lauritzen A/S, where he was active until 1969. He has, among other things, designed the Radiohuset at Frederiksberg (1937–46), Folkets Hus at Vesterbro (the current Vega, 1935–56) and a now-no longer used terminal building at Copenhagen Airport (1937–39), which are all listed today. He has also been behind buildings such as Daells Varehus (the current Hotel Sankt Petri) in Indre By (1935), Gladsaxe Town Hall (1937), Shellhuset (1950–51) and the Danish Embassy in Washington D.C. (1960), as well as contributed to TV-Byen in Gladsaxe (1959) and Copenhagen Airport Terminal 2. The bench is in good condition with a beautiful patina which it has gotten over the years. provenance: the bench has been acquired from Mørkhøj skole.
