"Visingsö" Pine Bench by Carl Malmsten for Svensk Fur, Sweden 1950s

About the Item

This bench was part of the famous “Visingsö” series by Carl Malmsten who is one of Sweden’s most celebrated furniture designers. This bench stands as a hallmark of Scandinavian design heritage and highlights Malmsten’s fine sense of proportion, line tension and balance between surfaces. The bench is the simplest form of furniture imaginable. With its uncomplicated look, a bench can transform a space in many ways. There are models created to serve as seats, some as tables while others as simple resting beds. With so many possible uses, a bench can be integrated within every area of the house right from the entry to the bedroom. Carl Malmsten’s master craftsmanship is evident in the joinery and smooth finish of this piece, highlighting the natural beauty of the pine. The neat finish also further emphasizes the beautiful grain pattern and warm tones of the wood that will only deepened with time, giving the bench a rich, inviting appearance. Malmsten had always advocated for an artisanal way of furniture design based on local materials and traditions, and thanks to that, beautiful pieces like this bench came to fruition. While Scandinavian pieces are generally free of ornamentation, this bench features upward curving edges, which are in line with the designer’s belief that “all edges must be thoroughly broken”. Although Carl Malmsten’s furniture was very much a product of the thoughts and ideals of the time, they have a timeless quality that makes them equally up-to-date and loved today. This is especially true for this "Visingsö" pine bench, which can seamlessly integrate into a variety of interior styles. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
