About the Item

Afra & Tobia Scarpa "Monk" Dining Chairs for Molteni, Red Leather and Beech, Italy, 1974, set of ten. The particular feature of this model is the support structure composed of two equal trestles in solid wood attached to shaped metal tubing, creating a single element for the seat and back. The two structural parts are joined by two pairs of bolts for each trestle, with the decorative touch of large hubs in burnished steel facilitating the connection to the solid wood. The seat surface is made with two leather parts shaped for comfortable sitting; besides the two coverage options, a solution was also offered. The trestles were made with composite elements, alternating two external layers in light wood. This chromatic motif was to be further developed in the Artona series. Afra Bianchin (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (1935) began their long collaboration in 1957. Starting from 1960, they collaborated with companies like Gavina, B&B Italia, and Cassina. Innovators and unconventional thinkers, they developed numerous projects discovering new ways of mixing different materials and shapes. Their pieces are exhibited in many museums worldwide, such as the MoMa in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Our atelier carefully checked the chairs. All the signs and imperfections on the surface are natural leather features, enhancing the material's natural beauty. We offer custom restoration and special reupholstering on request. Our atelier enhances Italy's excellence by providing dedicated and tailor-made customization services. Contact us for additional information.

Afra & Tobia Scarpa Red Leather 121 Dining Chair for Cassina, 1967, Set of 10
By Cassina, Afra & Tobia Scarpa
Located in Vicenza, IT
Set of ten Model 121 dining chairs, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa and produced by the Italian manufacturer Cassina in 1967. They feature English red leather upholstery and a walnut structure. Fully restored in Italy. Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed the 121 chair in 1965. A sketch from 1943 made by Carlo Scarpa (Tobia’s father) inspired its shape. Two thin plywood “petals” compose the seat and the backrest. They are available with leather upholstery or aniline-dyed. The back has cut in the lower part, required due to a reinforcement that reacts to torsion stress, which is strongest at this point. Furthermore, the basis is a solid wood double trestle. Eight screws link...
