Calvet chair in solid oak by Antoni Gaudí 20th century Spanish modernist design
About the Item
Gaudí designed a chair for the Casa Calvet. One that was rich in form and representative of his timeless creativity.
The Calvet chair features outstanding artisanal ornamental carving on the seatback. The chair is stunning from all angles, and the trapezoidal backrest draws the eye down to the seat with the single support of a smooth and sturdy neck. The seat connects seamlessly to the tapered legs that outstretch like grasping hands. Made up of five pieces, the Calvet chair has a sinuous and slender form, balancing the oak material and dark body with the seemingly fragile yet strong supports.
The chair is numbered and accompanied by a certificate signed by the director of the Gaudí Cathedra, certifying that it is a faithful and exact reproduction of the original designed by Antoni Gaudí.
Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) is among the most internationally famous Spanish architects, and his unorthodox approach is still considered ground-breaking to this day.
He was closely involved with all the decorative elements of his projects, including furniture. BD understood modern designers’ appreciation for Gaudí’s furniture, and was the first company to rescue these historical artefacts, creating a handcrafted series of reproductions using the same materials, varnished solid oak, including a whole wealth of details used in the manufacture of the originals.
At BD contemporary creations have always gone hand-in-hand with those of the revered classical masters. Its re-editions of designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann and Giuseppe Terragni were already very well known. However, even more outstanding is the work behind the first production of the fascinating furniture created by Gaudí for some of his more iconic works.
