Ephraim Ståhl, Late Gustavian / Early Empire Chairs, Pair, Circa 1800

Ephraim Ståhl (1767 Stockholm 1820), fine pair of Late Gustavian / Early Empire Chairs with intersecting arrows with centered rosettes, griffin motif and fluted legs, origin: Stockholm, Sweden, circa 1800, reupholstered in linen sateen fabric by Rogers & Goffigon. At the Collective 2, NYC, Glenn Adamson, the Director of the Museum of Arts and Design, was the guest curator for Collective Focus: Scandinavia, a special exhibition booth at the Fair. Glenn selected and curated a very special, and small, selection of furniture and objects to showcase the best of design from Scandinavia. He chose these Late Gustavian Griffin motif chairs. Very similar chairs by Ephraim Ståhl, illustrated in: 1. Stolens Guldålder; Stolar & Stolmarkare I Sverige 1650 - 1850, Torsten Sylvén, pg. 222 2. Nordiska Museets Möbler Från Svenska Herremanshem V. III, by Sigurd Wallin, pg. 139 3. Ephraim Ståhl, by Eva Nordenfelt, pg. 193 After seeing the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum and collections of Roman art and antiquities during his journey to Rome in 1783-4, Gustaf III was inspired to move towards a purer and more severe form of Neoclassicism. Upon his return, he invited several French artists to his court including the architect and painter Louis Jean Despre as well as Louis and Jean-Baptiste Masreliez, to help him apply the new Neoclassical lessons in Sweden. Though the official start of the Empire style is usually said to be 1810 (with the arrival of Crown Prince Carl Johan, one of Napoleon’s marshals)and there is certainly an overlap. Early Empire (Karl-Johan) furniture has the elegance, airiness and attention to detail characteristic of Late Gustavian. These characteristics can be evidenced in this pair of chairs.
