About the Item

A pair of original period Austrian, Wiener Werkstätte bentwood wood bistro chairs by manufacturer Thonet 1870-1956 . These authentic and elegant handmade chairs feature sinuous steamed wood in an organic style with Bauhaus, Vienna Secession details. Double curved back design extends the full length of the back rest and is complemented by a similar coiling stretcher shelf which serves both as an aesthetic and supportive element typical of the Austrian style. The chairs have their original decorative openwork seats with a star design surrounded by a perforated circular shape. The seats have a small recessed well in the center and are comfortable. The front legs end in self flanged sabots. Since these chairs are handmade, there is a slight 5/8 " difference in height between the two chairs; one is: 35 1/2" ht, the other is 34 7/8 " ht. Thonet made these chairs by steaming pieces of beech wood in saturated steam so that the wood bends more easily. Aspects of both machine and hand work are used to achieve Thonet's unique process. The firm perfected these techniques and Industrial designs and thus became very popular throughout Europe. One bears the original Gebrüder Thonet label which was used between 1888- 1922. The Werkstätte was a productive cooperative of artisans in Vienna, Austria founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer. The museum of Applied Arts in Vienna owns a large collection of Thonet's production and hold exhibitions showcasing Thonet's historic objects and furniture. A lot of these chairs were used in cafes all over Europe. The chairs are highly versatile in style and can complement any period furnishing, ie: Jugendstil, Art Crafts, Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, Rustic, traditional, Transitional English cottage, Loft, country home, farm house, Brooklyn loft, Arts & Crafts home, Midcentury environment, study, entry foyer, and can be used as additional seating, office chairs, desk chairs, slipper chairs, pull up chairs, or as decorative chairs in a foyer or dining room or anywhere a dramatic statement is warranted. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. In good condition in a nice sheen finish w/ small imperfections, tiny dents, scuffs, mottling of color, minuscule chips and possible hairline crazing of veneer, very presentable and sturdy.
