Adrian Pearsall Rare Brutalist 'Wave' Daybed in Alpaca Bouclé, 1960s, Signed

About

This extremely rare 'Wave' daybed / chaise with sought-after and very hard to find brutalist base was designed by Adrian Pearsall and crated by Craft Associates (signed), circa 1960s, featuring newly and expertly reupholstered alpaca bouclé with square button-tufted sections. This rare collectors piece is for the distinguished collector or for an interior designer with a client demanding the best of the best. Rarity is one factor that sells this piece on its own, but factor in the expensive and gorgeously soft nubby alpaca bouclé with squared of button-tufted sections - this incredible piece is a one of a kind that you must get for yourself or your client before someone else does. Sink back into this generously proportioned double-wide (57" width) daybed / chaise lounge by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates (this original authentic example is signed), designed and made in the 1960s. This expansive 'Wave' chaise with extremely rare Paul Evans styled Brutalist base provides a comfortable seat for one or two people, which you can stretch out and relax on as it gently supports your body by the use of its undulating wave formation. Casual, laid-back, relaxed - yet stylish, refined and cool. This is how this piece communicates your style and by good placement of it in your room - this can blend in perfectly with other pieces while still making an understated statement. We have had several of the more common 'Wave' rocking chaise but this rare resin made brutalist base, in the style of Paul Evans 'Sculpted Metal' collection, combined with the newly reupholstered alpaca boucle is a feast for the eyes and a special catch for the discriminating collector. This elegant chaise longue by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates, circa 1960, would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Measurements: H 30.5" x W 57" x D 37" Condition: Newly reupholstered alpaca bouclé in perfect condition. Base is in excellent vintage condition with light wear. Sturdy and sound, ready to be used immediately.

About the Designer

Adrian Pearsall

Adrian Pearsall designed some of the most exuberant and expressive American furniture of the 1950s and ’60s. For verve and vivacity of form, he surpasses even Vladimir Kagan — whose work is the emblem of swinging, sexy mid-20th century modernism. Pearsall gave his imagination free rein, and his flamboyant, eye-catching styles are icons of what has become known as “Atomic Age” design. Pearsall studied architectural engineering at the University of Illinois before opening his Pennsylvania furniture company, Craft Associates, in 1952, and that training shows in many designs. A Pearsall trademark, for example, is a lounge chair with an exceptionally tall, trapezoidal back, which give the pieces a skyscraper-like silhouette. Pearsall also had a talent for so-called "gondola sofas" — long, low-slung pieces with upswept ends. Many of Pearsall’s sofas and chairs are supported not by legs, but on gently arced walnut skids. Pearsall also had a gift for tables, in particular glass-topped side and coffee tables with frames that have the look of an Alexander Calder stabile. As you will see from the offerings on 1stDibs, Adrian Pearsall had flair, and his work adds an attention-getting, sculptural exclamation point to any décor.
