About the Item

Stunning vintage chrome and cane square tub chair with blue & rust fabric Model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Stunning vintage chrome and cane square tub chair with blue & rust fabric Model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, this chair came to us without its legs/feet. We produced replacement feet as close to the originals as we could ascertain. The fabric has two places on the front base bottom edge where we have added patches and a few minor snags throughout. We would not be opposed to using it as is – we like the patina, but most will want to recover. It is priced accordingly. The caning is good. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1970’s. Tub chair, EXTRORDINAIRE!!!!! WOW!!! Isn’t it breathtaking? We certainly think so! This is a phenomenal vintage square tub chair model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. This fabulous chair design is still in current production by Thayer Coggin; but this one is the vintage original! And it wears its ORIGINAL lovely blue and rust striped and patterned fabric… We realize that said fabric is in “wonderfully worn” condition; however, it’s so great that we would use it the way it is so we could enjoy it a bit, but most will want to recover. Even though we love this fabric we can also imagine it wearing a soft neutral colored fabulous mohair or one of Jack Lenor Larsen’s phenomenal current production fabrics! This incredible chair has loose seat and back cushions of foam and poly which nestle nicely into the inner chair frame that is also all upholstered. All of this is then supported and surrounded on both sides and back by the gorgeous cane and chrome outer frame. Talk about SUPERB comfort and ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS design!!! We did have to do a little modification to this lovely chair as we acquired it without legs, or possibly a swivel base, so we have added custom-made-as-close-to-the-originals-as-we-could short round wood legs and it looks incredible!! It is going to look amazing in your modern living room next to a wonderful sofa or loveseat, in a corner of your bedroom, or in a sitting room next to a fantastic floor lamp. In addition, it would look marvelous in an industrial setting, contemporary country home, or surrounded by some Hollywood Regency decor. One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs. Iconic designer and manufacturer, Impeccable style, and unmatchable comfort… This fabulous tub chair by Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin has it ALL!! What are you waiting for? Make it yours!! MCM Grand Haven Chair by Jack Van der Molen for Jamestown Lounge in Blue Fabric
By Jamestown Lounge Company, Jack Van der Molen
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous Mid-Century Modern Grand Haven dining or accent chair designed by Jack Van Der Molen for Jamestown Lounge Company. Beautiful vintage condition. We had the foam replaced in the original cushion, but it still wears its original blue hopsack fabric. We have deep cleaned the fabric but there are still hints of staining. Hard to find but it is there. I would not be afraid to use it however. The original webbing has been replaced and the wood has been restored to its original glory. However, you may still find small imperfections as it is a vintage piece. Please see photos, circa 1950s-1960s Roses are red, violets are blue, and so is this awesome Grand Haven chair we have to offer you!!! We have a vintage ad that denotes these as “the famous Grand Haven chair, winner of the coveted House Beautiful Classic Award given for exceptional value in design, construction and comfort.” That couldn’t be more accurate! Besides the obvious beauty, this chair is super comfortable and ready to grace your mid-century modern home with its bold presence. It wears its original blue “hopsack” fabric, and we had the foam replaced in the original cushion, so it is closer to its original condition. This would be a wonderful accent chair to have in your entry way for sitting as you remove your shoes or a king chair at your dining table. Wherever you choose to put it, this chair is sure to be your new conversation piece. Jack Van der Molen is an award-winning gifted American designer of the mid-20th century. He was born in 1922 and is a man of many accomplishment and talents. He was awarded five Battle Stars for his actions during WWII, is a fabulous golfer winning many tournaments, and an excellent watercolorist with work in private and commercial collections. He was educated at Kendall School Design in Grand Rapids. His furniture design work successfully combines organic details with clean lines. He designed several lines of furniture for Jamestown Lounge Co. including “Americana Casual”. He even won the coveted House Beautiful Magazine “Best Chair of the Year” award for his “Grand Haven” chair for Jamestown in 1959. In addition, he collaborated with Dupont initiating use of polyester fiber in upholstered furniture. His 61 years designing for top manufacturers is celebrated by how desirable and sought after his designs are today. Jamestown Lounge Company of Jamestown, New York was founded in 1888 by four partners. They first manufactured, obviously from their name, only lounges. These were long armless, backless, upholstered pieces with a hard roll at one end…what my mother always called a “fainting couch”. They soon added other box couches and convertible sofa beds leading into full manufacturing of all kinds of case and upholstered goods. They are famous for their Feudal Oak...

Vintage MCM Chrome & Royal Blue Fabric Armchairs by Hibriten Chair Company
By Hibriten
Located in Topeka, KS
Stunning pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern royal blue and chrome armchairs by Hibriten Chair Company. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The chrome has no pitting that we have seen, and the fabric shows hardly any sign of use. There may be slight fading, but it is overall and so… not noticeable. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1960’s Bold, beautiful, and royal blue!!! This is a gorgeous pair of vintage armchairs by Hibriten Chair Company. They are constructed of square chrome tube frames and wear a lovely royal blue fabric on their seat and back. They’re just BEAUTIFUL!! They would be wonderful used as side chairs in your living room, family room, bedroom, study, or as host and Hostess chairs at either end of your Mid-Century Modern dining table. They are very versatile and have that pop of color you have been needing in that dull space. Regardless of where you choose to use them, they are sure to be eye-catching, comfortable, and full of Mid-Century Modern style. Hibriten actually had 2 companies- Hibriten Furniture Co, and Hibriten Chair Co. Both located in Lenoir, N. C. Hibriten Furniture was founded in the 1920’s by Orrin Robbins and Hibriten Chair Co. was founded a few years later by Robey Robbins. Hibriten Chair Co. was well known for its extremely high quality of solid mahogany or walnut French reproductions and other styles of furniture. Hibriten became a part of Bernhardt Furniture in the 1950-1960’s with their president George C. Robbins and was eventually purchased by Bernhardt sometime in the early 1970’s. A fun fact… The furniture on the set of the popular 1965-1971 television show “Green Acres...

Vintage Mid-Century Modern Club Lounge Chair by Flair Division for Bernhardt
By Bernhardt
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern club chair or lounge chair from the Flair Division of Bernhardt Furniture. It is in wonderful vintage condition and wearing its original light turquoise blue nubby fabric. It has been professionally cleaned but the fabric does have fading as you would expect and there are still stains but no holes or tears. It will be at its best recovered. It is priced accordingly. Please see photos, circa 1960s. I must tell you when we walked into the home where we obtained this chair and many of our other recent and soon to be offerings, I thought if I was ever going to faint this is the time. Of course, the house itself blew me away and then……the original furniture and art in all its glory. This chair is part of a three-piece living room suite by Bernhardt Furniture Flair Division and we are offering all three pieces this week. This club chair with its Lawson styling and loose cushions is really comfy; plus, it is held up off the floor with a fabulous base. The base or legs are comprised of a pair of walnut planks turned upright and running from front to back on each side of the chair. Simple yet dynamic. Bernhardt Furniture was established in 1889 by John Mathias Bernhardt and has been going strong for over 125 years. He spent many years out west in Oregon Territory. After a serious illness, traveling back home to Lenoir, North Carolina and working as a logger in the densely forested foothills of Grandfather Mountain...
