Eight dining chairs model 8104 by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, rosewood, briar burl, lacquered wood, enameled steel, brass, Italy, circa 1975.
This set of chairs that is designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa is a unique design by the designere couple. The back and seat resemble a tomato, heart like shape that seems to be designed to fit the human body in an unparalleled way. The supporting structure is made out of four round legs and box stretcher on cast iron feet. The legs are solid turned walnut with inlaid strips of contrasting hard woods such as burl and rosewood. The joints on are made with brass fixtures that form a wonderful balance with the striped, inlaid walnut wood.
Tobia Scarpa (1906-1978) and Afra Scarpa (1937-2011) were trained as architects and influenced by various themes. Their main focus was the material itself followed by nature, Venetian and Japanese culture.
