Brass Leg Chairs by Pagani, Partner of Gio Ponti & Linda Bo Bardi, 1952, Arflex

$30,000Asking Price

About

Amazing set of ten restored 'Campanula' dining chairs by Italian architect Carlo Pagani (architectural partner of both Gio Ponti and Lina Bo Bardi) for Arflex, Italy, 1952. These are early examples identified by their artisan crafted solid wood frames and some of the chairs still retain their original early fabric 'Arflex' manufacturer's labels which we managed to save from the original upholstery and sew back onto the new high quality Dutch, DE PLOEG 'felt wool' upholstery fabric. A beautiful feature of this design is the finely crafted brass, tapered form, tubular legs that have been hand polished. The brass feet have elegant ball joints to take up uneven floor surfaces. We have photgraphic documentation of the entire restoration process. This really is a unique opportunity to acquire such a large and stunning set of these rare chairs. The chairs have had their upholstery completely restored , stripping these chairs right back to their bare wood frames and then applying new Pirelli rubber seat and backrest support webbing throughout, then new latex foam has been applied and finally they have been finished in new DE PLOEG 'Felt wool' fabric. The seating height of the chairs is 18.9" / 48cm Carlo Pagani worked in the offices of Gio Ponti and collaborated and partnered Gio Ponti on several important projects which were documented in the Italian design journals of the period such as the August 1940 issue of Domus. In 1940 Carlo Pagani started up his own architectural practice "Studio Bo and Pagani" in Via Gesu , Milan in partnership with modernist icon Lina Bo Bardi . In 1943 Pagani and Linda Bo became joint deputy editors of the famous Domus and Quaderni di Domus design periodicals until the magazines suspension in January 1945. In 1945 Domus commissioned Carlo Pagani and Lina Bo with photographer Federico Patellani to document and evaluate the situation of the destroyed country. Lina Bo, Pagani and Bruno Zevi then established the weekly magazine A – Attualità, Architettura, Abitazione, Literature: 'Domus', APRIL 1954, unpaginated Repertorio 1950/1980, page 71 Gramigna, 1985 ”New furniture” fig 126, page 42, Hatje, 1952.
