About the Item

Exceptional pair of Billar chairs. Model that reflects the modern Mediterranean style like no other. Antique edition of a Billar chair made of ash wood and with a seat made up of six intertwined leather bands (as in the designer's Tiracord model). Although there were different limited editions made in different woods and with different upholstery, this pair belongs to the first handcrafted ones since it continues to dispense with the crossbars and upholsters them in leather, unlike later editions. In addition, the Billar chair stands out above all for the pronounced height of its rear structure, generated by the extension of the rear legs. These elements, which become thinner as they gain height and suggest the courts of the sport of billiards, are joined by three pieces embedded in the center. The dimensions of the chair, contained in width and depth, contrast with the marked verticality, and this is the element that gives it personality and slenderness. This piece is exhibited at the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona. The long life of Jordi Vilanova's works confirms the success of the professionals who formed the La Cantonada group (a group of high-quality Catalan designers). Committed to a respectful renovation of artisan forms and their adaptation to industrial imperatives, they have created a wide range of objects in which their use value and their forms, essential and close, have known how to resist the passage of time. Both chairs are as seen in the images; With signs of the passage of time typical of pieces like this but in very good original condition. About the designer: Jordi Vilanova i Bosch (Barcelona, ????1925-1998) was a Catalan interior designer and cabinetmaker who worked for more than forty years in the mid-20th century in Barcelona. His modern furniture and his way of solving spaces were initially aimed at a large public with few financial resources and, therefore, little living space. But this great majority did not understand his proposal and it was the Catalan bourgeoisie, eager to break with obsolete stylistic canons, that accepted his work. A true pioneer of modern design, his work was characterized by the production of small series and the desire to formulate a Mediterranean aesthetic. A great admirer and connoisseur of Nordic design, Vilanova is known as the introducer in Spain and Catalonia of white wood furniture, that is, a piece of furniture without color or bright varnishes, functional, simple and refined, giving it a line of Mediterranean tradition. .
