About the Item

Set of 14 Philippe Starck “Royalton” Dining Chairs for the Royalton Hotel, 1988, by Driade (Aleph)** A rare complete set of fourteen iconic dining chairs designed by Philippe Starck for the groundbreaking redesign of New York’s Royalton Hotel in 1988. Commissioned by hotelier Ian Schrager, this design helped define the boutique hotel aesthetic of the late 20th century, with interiors that marked a turning point in hospitality design. Produced by the Italian manufacturer Driade under its Aleph label, the chairs embody Starck’s signature interplay of sculptural materials and poetic geometry. Designer: Philippe Starck Manufacturer: Driade (Aleph collection) Origin: Italy, 1988 Provenance: Royalton Hotel, New York City Materials: Pau rosa veneer plywood, cast aluminum front legs, solid beechwood rear legs Dimensions: 87 cm H × 57 cm W × 53 cm D (34.25″ H x 22.44″ W x 20.87″ D) Condition Report Overall in good vintage condition. The entire set was professionally refinished in 2008, as indicated by a dated Weber label on the underside of one chair, with the remaining chairs showing comparable refinishing work. Light to moderate general wear varies across the set. Assorted surface impressions, primarily along the backrest edges. Scattered abrasions and minor scratches visible to the finish. Raised veneer with minor splitting along the front edge of most seats, typical for the age and material. Structurally sound and stable. Eleven chairs retain the original Aleph label; two include rare Royalton Hotel inventory stickers, offering additional provenance. Why Collectors Seek These Chairs These chairs are sought after not only for their aesthetic presence—sleek, sculptural, and warm—but for their historic role in one of Starck’s most influential hospitality commissions. The Royalton project redefined hotel design, and these chairs remain one of the few surviving, functional artifacts from that landmark moment. Perfect for collectors of postmodern design, admirers of Starck’s visionary works, or anyone looking to add a rich design narrative to a dining or meeting space.
