Sam Maloof Early Sculptural Claro Walnut Dining Chairs - Set of 8

About the Item

A large and exquisite set of eight dining chairs by the California master, Sam Maloof, executed in stunning, highly figured claro walnut. Six of the chairs were built in the 1960s and two chairs were added to the set by the original owners in 1974. All eight chairs have been divinely restored by a George Nakashima certified refinisher. They are in exquisite vintage condition and ready for use in a high end interior. The seats were reupholstered at some point in their life in soft black leather calfskin. They show lovely age consistent patina with only very nominal cosmetic wear. The two later chairs are very slightly different, as they were ordered as "head" chairs. They are 1.5" less width and .75" taller. The seat height is .5" taller, and the arm heigh .25" taller. Dimensions of 6 chairs: 24"W x 19.5"D x 28.5"H, 17.5" Seat Height, 21.5" arm. Dimensions of 2 chairs: 22.5" x 19.5"D x 29.25"H, 18" Seat Height, 21.75" arm. Maloof originally designed this chair in 1952 and even used them in his own home. The design employed his first use of turned elements, paving the way for his future successes. A large and early investment grade set such as this one, is incredibly hard to come by and should only continue to grow in value. Provenance: From the estate of Harold and Jane Ullman, Los Angeles, California.
