Original Early 19th Century Louis XV Suite in Carved Wood, France
Original Early 19th Century Louis XV Suite in Carved Wood, France

Original Early 19th Century Louis XV Suite in Carved Wood, France

Located in Meulebeke, BE

A rare and beautifully cohesive early‑19th‑century French seating suite. This original Louis XV ensemble; comprising two side chairs, two armchairs, and one sofa, embodies the lyrical elegance and sculptural refinement that define the Rococo tradition. Sets of this scale and authenticity seldom survive intact, making this collection an exceptional opportunity for collectors, decorators, and restoration enthusiasts. Each piece displays the characteristic fluidity of the Louis XV style: sweeping curves, cabriole legs, and exuberant carved ornamentation that animates the frames with floral motifs, scrolls, and acanthus leaves. The wood retains a wonderfully aged patina, with traces of its original cream‑and‑gold finish softening into a romantic, time‑worn surface. Even in their unrestored state, the pieces radiate the charm and sophistication of French craftsmanship at its most expressive. The sofa, with its generous triple‑seat form, anchors the suite with grandeur, while the armchairs offer sculptural presence and comfort through their open backs and refined proportions. The two side chairs complete the composition, echoing the same decorative vocabulary and creating a harmonious visual rhythm across the set. As the upholstery has been removed, the entire suite awaits restoration, an invitation to shape its next chapter. The future owner may choose historically faithful fabrics such as silk damask or brocade, or introduce contemporary textiles for a striking dialogue between past and present. Upholstery can be completed independently by the client or arranged in collaboration with us, ensuring a result that respects both the heritage of the pieces and the aesthetic vision of their new home. Once restored, this Louis XV suite...

Prof. Karl Nothelfer * 14 June 1900 – 20 May 1980 Since the beginning of the 15th century, the Nothelfer family of carpenters has lived continuously in the former town of Überlingen. Every carpenter at that time mastered all aspects of woodworking, and the Nothelfers were no exception. They could even carve altars and figures and adorn them with gold, silver and paint. (Churches in Owingen and Hödingen). Some family members lived and worked in Hedingen or Hödingen, as the jubilarian Karl Nothelfer did in 1975. However, his father, Karl Anton Nothelfer, was the eldest of seven siblings and was therefore able to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. However, Karl Anton Nothelfer was unable to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. Instead, he moved to the industrial town of Singen with his young wife, Rosalie Hanner, and founded his own carpentry workshop. Hohenzollern in 1896, and he moved to the former Poststraße, where he founded his own carpentry workshop. He had a high sense of quality and form, and was a member of the German Werkbund before 1914. Karl Nothelfer and his three siblings grew up in such an environment. After attending primary and secondary school in Singen, Karl learnt the carpenter's trade in his father's workshop, before moving on to the Badische Landes-Kunstschule in Karlsruhe. , where he studied architecture. The well-known furniture professor also worked there at that time: Fritz Spannagel (born Freiburg, 1891; settled Ittendorf Castle near Meersburg in 1938; died 1957). burg (died 1957). In 1928, the gifted young architect received a teaching assignment at the Karlsruhe School of Art, but he followed his teacher Spannagel to Berlin in the same year. Berlin. Your living room — how your antique and vintage living room furniture is arranged, what style of furniture you’ve chosen, what kind of decor best suits your needs — should be an opportunity to express yourself as well as to unabashedly show off your design taste and preferences.

Common wisdom used to declare the kitchen the hub of the house. These days, the living room seems to have assumed the role of domestic focal point. Unlike the Victorian parlor, stiffly furnished and reserved for guests, today’s living room is a central place for reading and displaying your books, conversation and, well, living, with furnishings that lend themselves to both casual lounging and elegant entertaining.

A living room that doesn’t double as a family or TV room is a luxury. But even if the electronics are elsewhere, this is a hard-working, well-used space.

In an era that sees an increasing number of professionals working from home, sometimes your living room is multifunctional in ways you never thought possible. A corner of this room might be a designated home office, outfitted with a desk, your laptop and notebooks and, of course, the best possible lighting for those unscheduled Zoom calls. Perhaps you’ve sectioned off an area with side tables and armchairs for entertaining small groups while another corner of the room is home to a cozy reading nook.

The appetite for antique and vintage furniture — sculptural mid-century modern case pieces crafted in teak and other dark woods, the sexy, sensuous seating of the 1970s — has only broadened in recent years, with design lovers treasure hunting online and on Instagram.

A Scandinavian modern living room set, featuring lounge chairs and sofas by the likes of Hans Wegner or Kaare Klint, will help you introduce quality craftsmanship characterized by gentle, organic contours into your space, while a Camaleonda sofa by legendary Italian designer Mario Bellini will dazzle with its chunky form and convenient modular setup.

On 1stDibs, find an extraordinary collection of antique and vintage living room furniture inclusive of Space Age living room sets, other clever and provocative furnishings of the 1950s and ’60s, postmodern pieces and much more.
