About the Item

This early Danish mid-century pair of easy chairs is a great example of the unification of comfort and delicate design elements. The touch of Danish Modernism is recognizable in the exquisite materials, the craftsmanship, and in the elegantly curved and rounded edges. This particular chair silhouette - also referred to as the club chair - has been popular since the 1930s throughout Scandinavia, thanks to the organic, cosy curves, fully upholstered body, and high level of craftsmanship that define the style. The design of this pair of chairs is characterized by organic, bear-like shapes that create a cosy and welcoming sensation with the curved back and voluminous armrests that are formed from the same piece. As a representation of early modernist seating, there is a profound focus on comfort and cosiness, that invokes a pleasant homelike feeling. The chairs have two different sets of stained beech legs, thicker in the front, and splayed in the back. This is an interesting detail that primarily serves the chairs’ stability, while also adding visual interest. The elegant and cosy design is elevated by the light upholstery with a very apparent texture that adds plenty of character. The subtle pattern accentuates the soft curvature of the armchairs without being excessive. Danish design began to develop alongside that of its neighbours, Sweden and Finland, joining to create a new ‘Scandinavian Design’ brand. The use of colours, materials, the combination of crafts with industrial production, the obvious influence of the organic all created a stir of excitement that is experiencing a well deserved renaissance in the 21st century. ?Condition: In vintage condition.
