$19,600

About
Studio BBPR for Arflex, 'Giulietta' lounge chair, red fabric, lacquered metal, wood, Italy, 1958
Begiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers of the B.B.P.R. design group designed this armchair named ‘Giulietta’ in 1958. The sculpted seat contains a high back with side like wings. The wigs flow over into wide armrests, that slightly point upwards. Lifted by a slim, metal base, that is finished with wooden feet that is characteristic for the early edition of this chair. Currently upholstered in red fabric the chair is a true eye-catcher. With this model BBPR won the cover of the magazine Domus (no. 372 – November 1960).
BBPR was an architectural partnership founded by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969). BBPR was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The partnership was founded in opposition to Fascism and they wanted to develop a style that had no references to contemporary politics. During WW II, Gianluigi Banfi died in the camps of the Nazi's whereas the others were also severely defined by this era. They also strongly reacted against the International style by enriching their buildings with medieval references.
