About the Item

Three pairs of extremely rare and highly coveted chairs designed by Gio Ponti and produced by Cassina, Italy for the First Class bar of Italia Line's MV Augustus ocean liner. These were salvaged from the famed liner at the ship breakers in Alang, India as she was being scrapped in 2011. These are identical to the chairs from Gustavo Pulitzer-Finali's astoundingly beautiful ballroom from Conte Biancamano and could even possibly be those very chairs as it was common for Italla and other lines to move stores and fittings from their decommissioned ships to their active fleet. In early Augustus promotional material, the only evidence of these chairs are the leather-covered examples from the First Class Bar. We are selling these chairs in pairs, in original as found condition. The luxurious transatlantic ocean liner Augustus was built in 1950 along with its sister ship Giulio Cesare and the interiors were beyond sumptuous, with designs by Ponti, Nino Zoncada and Gustavo Pulitzer Finali, among others. When the Augustus was retired from service with Italia Lines she was sold several times and ultimately served as a floating hotel in Manila named the MS Philippines. It was during this period that these chairs were recovered in the gold and burgundy velvet, from the original yellow gold leather. This is also when the mahogany legs were painted with a mahogany colored paint. Originally they had been stained to look like walnut. Ponti first designed these chairs for the 1949 retrofit of the Conte Biancamano, see image 10. It it possible that this set of chairs originated on the Biancamano and were later integrated by Italia Lines into the inventory of the Augustus. Literature: Piccione, Paolo.
