" • Pierre Chapo • “It seems to me that what I create needs to be translated into simple silhouettes as in typography. I think print letters often have this character of complete simplicity and I would like my furniture to be as clear to understand, as it is clear to grasp the letter T, the letter L or the letter D. » So Pierre Chapo describes his practice. Honesty, sincerity and generosity : these words define creator personality and his works. Like the elm of his furniture, his favorite material, Pierre Chapo does not cheat in his creations and delivers pieces of perfect authenticity. After his studies at the School of Fine Arts, he travels a lot : he goes to Scandinavia, then to Latin America and finally to the United States. He discovers different ways to apprehend creation, materials and forms. He grew up : since his return in 1956, despite his presence in architectural firms, his desire to found his own agency is more important. He observed the concept of self-made-man and the spirit of business owner in the other side of the Atlantic : so he creates his own workshop in Gordes, in Vaucluse, France. He spends his life creating in this place, closer to nature, an essential point in his work. But he can’t produce his furniture in the Vaucluse so he contacts the Seltz company in Alsace. He does not want to forget the craft so this family business is perfect for him : they mold the wood for several generations. By functional aspects, his workshop practice, his craftsmanship and his production, he is very close to the Bauhaus in its conceptual essence. The rigor of the construction in his furniture is the manifesto of his architecture training. He is close to Charlotte Perriand’s ideas too : the function is the primary idea of ??each of his creations and the honesty, the base : never to disguise the obviousness. So assemblages are often simple and visible because they are the only ornaments ; they give rhythm to his works. The harmony comes only from the proportion of each element. He wants to share the sensual pleasure that gives the touch of elm. Thanks to simple stripped and harmonious forms, he wants « that beauty comes out of the right place of an assembly and the right conformity to the human scale. The color of the wood, its vein, the curves it offers bring the fantasy, the unexpected, the grace. » The first creation of Pierre Chapo is the bed « L01 », called « Godot » : he likes to recall this founding anecdote, because this piece was created for a specific and famous customer, Samuel Beckett. He is always attached to Vaucluse, however he opened in Paris the Chapo gallery in the fifth arrondissement. Then he collaborated with big names such as Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille or Georges Jouve. His career is very important in Design history. Between craftsmanship and design, its « furniture gilded to perfection and massive pleasure” – as archives at the Museum of Decorative Arts (MAD, Paris) reminds – seduced a large number of people.
