This has to be the most decorative and interesting rocking chair I have ever had the please to purchase, it is 393 years old and some wonderful early 17th century carvings. Starting at the top you have a winged Armorial crest under which is written "Alis Volat Propriis" which is Latin for "She Flies With Her Own Wings" either side of that is the date 1631, following on down you have the exquisite Adam & Eve scene of Adam refusing the forbidden fruit, this is bordered by Jacobean style carvings and is dated to the top again 1631, following further down you have the name Countess Margaret Chaney, the countess lived from 1565-1608 when she was executed by King Henry VIII, I will include the biography below as it makes very interesting reading. The final piece of carving reads "Hush Abye Baby" reffering to the fact that this was most likely a nursing chairs for babies
It seems that this could have possibly been the countesses chair...
