Camaleonda Modular Sofa by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, 1970

About the Item

Camaleonda, designed by Mario Bellini in 1970, is the sofa that defined the interior design aesthetic of an entire era, becoming an icon of Italian design. Camaleonda achieved widespread acclaim after being showcased at the exhibition *"Italy: The New Domestic Landscape "* held at MoMA in New York in 1972. This unique and dynamic product exemplifies Mario Bellini's ability to strike a perfect balance between the strict geometry of the square module and the welcoming roundness of the padding, highlighting the elasticity and tactile ergonomics that characterize many of his design projects. Camaleonda is distinguished by its generous padding, which forms the characteristic *capitonné* effect, achieved through an innovative system of cables, hooks, and rings. This system ensured both the sofa's distinctive appearance and the modularity of its elements, allowing them to be freely arranged or used separately. The sofa's remarkable comfort was made possible by the use of polyurethane foam, a modern industrial and technological approach introduced by B&B Italia to the furniture sector of the time. This innovative technique revolutionized upholstered furniture in those years. This piece retains its original structural materials as well as its upholstery, made of soft, biscuit-colored pure cotton chenille, now carefully cleaned with specific products for padded furniture. The original manufacturer's tag by B&B Italia is affixed to the back, guaranteeing the piece's authenticity. Mario Bellini (1935) is one of the most influential and innovative contemporary architects and designers of the 20th century. Starting in the early 1960s, he transitioned from urban planning to become one of the most critical product and furniture designers of his time. Early in his career, Bellini collaborated with major companies such as Olivetti, Cassina, and B&B Italia, experimenting with new materials and techniques, leading to an early understanding of synthetic resins and polyurethanes, innovating the industry and achieving significant technical milestones. Internationally renowned, Bellini is an eight-time winner of the Golden Compass Award and has received prestigious architecture awards
