About the Item

Excellent quality Rio Rosewood Corner Suite by Gordon Russell. Born: 20 May 1892, Cricklewood, London, England Died: 7 October 1980, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England. A meticulous visionary and designer of furniture who made the business of good design a matter of popular concern. Russell's working career follows a transition from his Cotswold Arts and Crafts training during the 1920s through to his conversion to a furniture maker of thoroughly modern styles and a commitment to design reform. In 1938 he set up a retailing consortium, the Good Furnishing Group, for selling well-designed, mass-produced furniture. He was the favoured candidate to spearhead the government's wartime utility furniture scheme using top designers to break the British public's tradition of reproduction furniture and bring in a more simple, honest, modern style. In this he achieved some success and further appointments followed. Russell was director of the Council of Industrial Design (COID) 1947 to 1959, executive committee member of the FOB and president of the DIA from 1959 until 1962. "To me it was a poor age that could make no contribution of its own. I argued that if the eighteenth century had been content to imitate the seventeenth, then the finest age of English cabinet making would never have been born. I had no qualifications beyond a burning belief that my own age might recover its self-respect, a sound knowledge of old furniture and construction, and an interest in the possibilities of the machine."
