Small French Louis XVI Style Giltwood Upholstered Settee or Marquise c. 1900

About the Item

A delightful little French gilt wood settee of small proportions, generally referred to as a "marquise", the delicate profile and fragile lines make a beautiful and non-imposing backdrop to an interior. Beautifully suited for placement between two windows, at the foot of a bed or in front of a large bay window, this piece has a size and style that allows almost limitless blending into an interior. The carefully carved crest rail has a foliate influence that curves around the loose cushion into scrolled handholds over scaled supports that join the apron in bold acanthus carvings on both sides. The apron is fluted around all sides, the legs joining in a carving of acanthus that is reminiscent of flames over the turned and tapering legs with fluting over the same "acanthus-flame" ankle carving over round toes. The cushion was recently covered in a brand new linen, the cushion being quite comfortable and softening the angular form of the settee nicely. This sturdy little piece is an enjoyable find that will certainly add great visual interest to any classic or French interior. Measurements: 19 3/4" D x 35 3/4" W x 30" H; 22" H to cushion, 16" H to frame Condition Report: Extensive gilt and gesso loss throughout with wear and chipping to most surfaces. Cracking in apron. Three spots of cane loss in front left panel, one large spot in back right panel. Error in upholstery of cushion resulted in a folded seam along the front edge (brand new upholstery).
