Swedish Gustavian Neoclassical Settee
About the Item
This is a beautifully elaborated c. 1800 Swedish Gustavian bench or settee. The bench retains its original painted surface which has acquired a superb natural patina over its 200 years of life. The bench features a curved shaped wooden back which slopes into outswept arms terminating in beautifully carved eagle heads which were at one point gold leafed. The four front legs of the bench are headed by carved paterae supported by fluted legs and ending in finely carved lion's paw feet. All of th carved elements are original to the bench. We have upholstered the bench in a linen stripe and wide gimp. The bench is sturdy and ready for another 200 years of use.
