About the Item

Rare and remarkable workmanship chair from the 1800s. In this day and age it is very difficult to still find even one craftsman that is capable of hand carving a good quality sculpture. As you can see in our photos, in the 1800s there were still artisans that were so skilled that they could actually incorporate several unique sculptures into a chair. This particular Italian hallway chair was made to decorate and to impress. And if you look at the quality and the perfect way in which the various creatures are incorporated in this chair then you know that this certainly was and still is a statement AND a talking piece. Everything is so well balanced that this chair with its great patina truly is a joy to own and look at. In the Neoclassical Revival era creatures and elements of different styles were mixed together and this work of beauty is the perfect example. The squating Gothic chimeras (half dragon, half dog) are the perfect base to this chair and the back with its opposing male and female sculptures also is of a quality and decorative beauty that people will want to stop and look at the workmanship. The male figure here is showing some demonic features and the female is portrait more like a maid. To us, the perfect condition crown on top is saying that this chair is fit for a king. Have you also noticed the smiling green-man-like creature at the bottom of the back with his monstrous feet on either side? Finding a chair of such grand quality is a rarity, but finding it in such superb condition makes it even more gratifying. Also, because we are certain it cannot take long before this antique will grace a collector's living space. Mind you, even though antique hall chairs were not necessarily made for people to sit on, this finest quality specimen most certainly can be used, even if it was only to sit down and put your shoes on.
