Sofas or settees, reupholstered in mohair "Bold - Plâtre" by Pierre Frey, beech, Europe, 1940s
A beautiful set of settees from the Art Deco period, reupholstered in a soft, light crème mohair by Pierre Frey. The shape is fundamentally rectilinear, resting solidly on four slightly tapered wooden legs, joined by a framed base that defines the boundary of the seat. The backrest and seat are both framed within a squared wooden structure, accentuating their rigid orthogonality. The high rectangular back and low, straight seat give the piece a solid, grounded feel. Its counterpoint is the bold gesture of the cylindrical armrests. Through their precise proportions and the interplay of curves and lines, these sofas retain the essential elegance and poise that defines late Art Deco.
