French Louis XVI Painted Antique Settee Sofa, 18th Century

About the Item

This most striking settee is of the period remaining in simply outstanding condition. Originally the surface was at least partially burnished gilt, as traces of this are evident beneath the numerous later layers of paint. The current paint is a wonderful old surface, worn and well patinated with a certain mellowness and depth that make the settee quite eye-catching. The frame is skillfully carved with a smooth crest rail edged that slopes into upholstered half-arms and delicately carved handholds over the curvy arm supports. The craftsman showed great restraint in his design, allowing the precise proportions and clean lines to speak without unnecessary carved distractions - the only embellishments are the rather unusual and fully developed scrolled acanthus carvings from which the arm supports rise on either side. Pegged tenon-mortise construction joins the frame together, this stretched on the underside with two vertical braces (one replaced); the structure remains tight and sturdy after over two hundred years of regular use, a testament to the excellent craftsmanship. The entire form rests over thin turned and sharply fluted legs. Measurements: approximately 82" W x 32" D x 38 3/4" H; seat is 18 3/4" H and 25 1/2" D at the center Condition Report: Old (not original) worn green painted surface. Front right foot spliced (lower 4"), other restorations including old repairs to most legs. Upholstery is in "very good" condition, overall with minor discolorations, some slightly loose piping, some loose threads spots of discoloration verso. Sturdy and strong, one brace beneath the sofa replaced, the other strengthened with later iron brace; inactive pest damage; replaced blocking.
