Geraldo de Barros, pair of tubular metal armchairs, 1970s

About the Item

Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998) was a pioneering Brazilian artist whose influence extended across various artistic disciplines, including painting, photography, and furniture design. Born in Chavantes, São Paulo, de Barros studied architecture and co-founded the influential Grupo Ruptura, a movement that played a key role in introducing abstract art to Brazil. In the 1950s, de Barros shifted his focus to photography, gaining acclaim for his innovative experiments with the medium. His work often explored the intersection of geometric forms and everyday objects, showcasing a keen sense of composition and abstraction. Later in his career, de Barros ventured into furniture design, creating pieces that echoed the principles of modernism while incorporating his unique artistic perspective. His famous tubular armchairs and sofas , manufactured by Hobjeto, exemplify his ability to merge functionality with artistic expression, making it a sought-after collector's item. Geraldo de Barros's legacy continues to influence contemporary art and design, and owning a piece of his work is a rare opportunity to connect with the rich history of Brazilian modernism.
