Gio Ponti curved sofa by Casa e Giardino, Italy, 1940s

About the Item

A rare and beautiful curved sofa with a wooden frame and fabric upholstery, designed by Gio Ponti for "Casa e Giardino", manufactured in Italy in the 1940s. In Gio Ponti's ideal home, spaces dedicated to everyday life were of utmost importance. This curved sofa represents a focal point for those convivial and hospitable moments essential for social life. Spacious and welcoming, with a curved side that encourages intimate conversations, it is perfectly suited to creating a cozy atmosphere. Curved sofas have a long history in bourgeois living rooms, offering a level of intimacy difficult to achieve with traditional armchairs. In the context of the 20th century, with revolutions in domestic architecture and a greater rationalization of spaces, this sofa takes on new relevance, transcending its original function as a piece of resting furniture. Gio Ponti collaborates with "Casa e Giardino" in the early 1940s, designing autonomous and versatile furniture that could be placed in the center of rooms rather than against walls, as was traditionally done. This sofa, with its distinctive curvature, fits perfectly into this vision, also serving as a divider between spaces. In a perspective that we might retroactively define as "open space," these pieces of furniture free the home from structural constraints, embracing the needs of the modern man. Ponti's words from 1934 remain relevant, highlighting how furnishing is not only a matter of aesthetics but rather a composition of spaces, light, and colors that influence our emotions and living experience. This sofa, accompanied by certification from the Ponti archive and completely restored in both frame and upholstery, features light alcantara covering. Its dimensions are: W. 240 - D. 150 - H. 77 cm.
