About the Item

An original “Samsas” three-seater sofa designed by Carl Malmsten and produced by O.H. Sjögren in Tranås, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design captures Malmsten’s signature human-centred approach — soft curves, gentle proportions and an inviting, organic form. The tufted backrest and elegantly rounded armrests create a sense of ease and refinement that has made the model a long-standing favourite in Swedish interiors. The “Samsas” was introduced in the late 1920s and has remained one of Malmsten’s most enduring designs. Its combination of visual lightness and deep comfort reflects his belief that furniture should support both the body and the spirit. Produced by O.H. Sjögren — Malmsten’s trusted manufacturer — each piece was carefully upholstered and finished to the highest standard, embodying the best of Swedish craftsmanship. This example retains its original striped wool upholstery in pale blue tones. The fabric is in good overall condition with some gentle fading on the armrests, consistent with age. The frame remains solid and supportive, preserving the timeless comfort of the original design. • Height 86 cm (33.9”), Width 185 cm (72.8”), Depth 80 cm (31.5”), Seat height 40 cm (15.7”) • Upholstery: Original striped wool fabric • Legs: Solid beech • Model: “Samsas” • Designer: Carl Malmsten • Manufacturer: O.H. Rejecting industrial minimalism, Malmsten championed a softer, human form of modernism rooted in natural materials and traditional methods. His collaboration with O.H. Sjögren produced many of his most beloved pieces, including the “Samsas” — a design that continues to embody the enduring warmth and elegance of Scandinavian modern design.
