Mid-Century Modern Sofas

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

"Orion" Sofa by Folke Jansson for SM Wincrantz, Sweden 1950s

By SM Wincrantz 1, Folke Jansson

Located in Utrecht, NL

Sweden contributed to the progression of form and function in its own way, based on long-standing traditions, natural resources, and the critical - yet often coincidental - availability of creative genius. Folke Jansson was certainly one of the latter, designing unique forms with an artistic touch. Jansson is a designer who is difficult to define, being the creator of daily objects which are far from the organic forms of Alvar Aalto, and yet not aiming for the minimalism of Arne Jacobsen or Poul Kjaerholm. His experimentation has led him to play both with the free forms embedded into materials, and with the geometric shapes superimposed on them. This ‘Orion’ sofa...

By Preben Schou Andersen

Located in Deland, FL

This elegant Model 333 three-seater sofa by Schou Andersen embodies the refined simplicity of Danish Mid-Century Modern design from the 1980s. Crafted from solid beech, the frame showcases the wood’s smooth texture and warm, honeyed tones, with clean lines and subtle curves that highlight its Scandinavian aesthetic. The original floral upholstery, featuring a delicate pattern in soft, earthy hues, adds a touch of vintage charm while complementing the beech’s natural beauty. The sofa’s slatted backrest and ergonomic design ensure both comfort and style, making it a versatile piece for a modern living space or a collector’s curated interior. Produced by Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, this sofa reflects the company’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and timeless design, capturing the essence of late 20th-century Danish furniture. Schou Andersen, often associated with the broader legacy of Danish furniture design, refers to the work produced by Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, a prominent manufacturer in Denmark during the mid-to-late 20th century. While specific details about an individual designer named Schou Andersen are scarce, the name is tied to the company’s output, which often featured collaborations with renowned designers like Kai Kristiansen. Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik was known for producing high-quality furniture, including dining chairs, tables, and sofas, that exemplified the Danish Modern movement’s emphasis on functionality, minimalist forms, and natural materials like teak, rosewood, and beech. Their pieces, including the Model 333 sofa, gained recognition for their durability and elegant design, contributing to the global popularity of Scandinavian furniture. Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, established in Denmark during the mid-20th century, was a respected manufacturer known for its role in the Danish Modern movement. The company produced a wide range of furniture, often collaborating with notable designers such as Kai Kristiansen, who designed iconic pieces like the Model 42 dining chairs for them. Operating primarily from the 1950s through the 1980s, Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik specialized in crafting furniture from premium woods like teak, rosewood, oak, and beech, focusing on clean lines, ergonomic design, and meticulous craftsmanship. The Model 333 sofa, manufactured by Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, reflects their dedication to creating functional yet aesthetically refined pieces that remain cherished by collectors today. The company’s legacy endures through its timeless designs, which continue to be celebrated in the vintage furniture market. ---Dimensions--- Width: 72 in / 182.88 cm Depth: 27 in / 68.58 cm Height: 31 in / 78.74 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm Arm Height: 30 in / 76.2 cm This splendid three-seater sofa by Schou Andersen is in 100% original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection.
