About the Item

Swedish designer Arne Norell’s designs gained recognition for their use of traditional materials, like fabrics and wood, combined with simple and vanguard lines. This three-seater ‘Langenthal’ sofa was designed by Arne Norell in the 1960s for Norell Möbel AB, the workshop founded in 1954 by Arne Norell. Ever since its establishment, it has been a family business carrying on Norell’s design legacy, and the same factory that Arne Norell built in the 1950s is still where the company exists today in Sweden. The design of this remarkable sofa carries a certain “design weight” that is the result of its understated elegance, premium materials, and outstanding craftsmanship. Norell was known for his versatile use of wood and leather in his furniture designs, which are characterised by comfort and ease, and were to a great extent inspired by Danish design. This ‘Langenthal’ sofa is no exception, with a design ethos centered on its linear characteristics, stylish upholstery, and the subtly curved edges offering gentle yet robust support for the spine. The tightly fitted upholstery and wood frame complement each other in numerous ways, enhancing each other’s individual qualities, such as the wooden legs’ distinctive lines and the fabric’s rich texture. The result is an infinitely elegant and comfortable look that is unlikely to ever lose its appeal. Norell began his journey as a furniture designer in the 1950s, becoming renowned for his ability to seamlessly blend comfort and aesthetics through innovative experimentation. During the 1960s, Swedish furniture design witnessed a transformative period marked by a departure from ornate and heavy styles to more streamlined, minimalist forms. Arne Norell played a pivotal role in shaping this evolution, embracing a modernist ethos while staying true to the principles of excellent craftsmanship and quality materials. His designs, including the ‘Langenthal’ model, are celebrated for their timeless appeal, functional elegance and style. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Leif Hansen "Model 62" Sofa for Kronen Møbelfabrikken, Denmark, 1960s
By Kronen, Leif Hansen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Leif Hansen’s Model 62 sofa is commonly referred to as the “Geisha” and was designed in 1959. This model is a strikingly elegant example of Danish modernism’s streamlined, luxurious aesthetic appeal to contemporary eyes. This three-seater sofa is made of two types of exotic woods and dressed in a premium light fabric. Its character is created by three main elements: the visually sectioned, fully upholstered body, the wooden accents on the arms, and the distinctively shaped legs. It says a lot when a model is representative not only of a designer, but also of a manufactory. So is the case with this Geisha sofa...

Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
By Alfred Christensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...
